Priya, an 18-year-old unmarried woman from South Delhi, was allegedly killed by her father after he discovered that she was four months pregnant. Police suspect that her father, Lakhpat Singh, planned the killing because he feared the social stigma associated with his unmarried daughter's pregnancy.

Priya lived with her family in the Tigri area of South Delhi. According to police, after Singh learned that his daughter was pregnant, he became concerned about the consequences for the family's reputation. Rather than allowing her to continue her pregnancy, he allegedly decided to take her to Agra, Uttar Pradesh, where the family originally came from.

On 28 July 2026, Singh allegedly took his daughter from Delhi to Basauni in Agra on the pretext that she would receive medical treatment. He was accompanied by a male relative. After spending the night at a relative's house, the two men allegedly took Priya to the banks of the Chambal River the following day.

On 29 July, according to the police investigation, Priya was taken to a remote part of the Chambal River. Singh allegedly drowned his daughter there with the assistance of the relative. Police believe that the killing had been planned in advance rather than being the result of a spontaneous incident.

After returning to Delhi, Singh allegedly attempted to conceal what had happened. He reported his daughter missing at Tigri police station and gave an account that led police to initially believe that she might have disappeared or been kidnapped.

The investigation changed direction after police found inconsistencies in the family's account. During questioning, Singh allegedly confessed to killing his daughter and took investigators to Agra, where he identified the place along the Chambal River where the alleged killing had taken place. His relative was also arrested in connection with the case.

According to Delhi Police, the suspected motive was the family's fear of social stigma after discovering that Priya was pregnant while unmarried. Deputy Commissioner of Police Anant Mittal said the investigation had revealed that the father, fearing social stigma, conspired with a relative and took his daughter to the Chambal River near Basauni, where she was allegedly intentionally drowned.

The case was being investigated as a suspected honour killing. The circumstances are particularly significant because the alleged reason for the killing was not a criminal act by the victim, but the family's fear of social shame surrounding her pregnancy outside marriage.

Police launched a search for Priya's body in the Chambal River. As of the latest reports, the body had not been recovered. The search was complicated by heavy rainfall, the difficult terrain of the Chambal ravines and the absence of a motorable road to the alleged site of the killing.

The police were also investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged concealment of the crime. Singh had reportedly returned to Delhi and filed a missing-person complaint after the killing, allegedly attempting to make the disappearance appear unrelated to him. Investigators subsequently brought the accused back to the alleged crime scene as part of the investigation.

The killing of Priya is another example of how fear of family and community shame can be used to justify violence against women. In this case, police believe that an unmarried young woman who became pregnant was allegedly killed by members of her own family because they feared the social consequences of her pregnancy.

The investigation was ongoing and the victim's body had not yet been recovered at the time of the latest reports. The accused remained suspects in the case and would have to face the criminal justice process before guilt could be established.
